The film begins with a view of the landscape, immediately revealing the grandeur of the smallest European high mountains. A silhouette of a man appears, informing us of his death and burial. This is Prince Hohenlohe, though only his spirit is present, revisiting the land he dedicated his life to around 150 years ago.
Christian Hohenlohe, a German nobleman, remains a controversial figure in European history. Significant in natural sciences, hunting, and conservation, he established rules that still govern the Tatras under TANAP's visitor regulations. Hohenlohe appeared in the Tatras in 1879, settled in Tatranska Javorina, and implemented wildlife protection measures, restricting hunting and access to his fenced estates. His story, almost mystical, includes introducing new species to his Slovak estates, reflecting the knowledge of his era.
The spirit of the prince moves through the landscape, contemplating ecosystems. He revisits observation points from where he once watched wildlife, now invisible, adding a new perspective. His old-fashioned attire and manner contrast with the present-day scenery. Observing a capercaillie, he reflects on its past abundance and current scarcity, nostalgically recalling old images and noting the shift from wildlife territories to tourism and ski resorts. His monologue is paired with unique wildlife footage, also exploring other species like eagles, chamois, lynxes, beavers, and bears.
As a commentator, Hohenlohe guides the audience through impressive Tatras scenery, emphasizing the importance of leaving nature untouched. He evaluates the success and failure of his conservation rules. "The Legacy" is visually captivating, with the Belianske Tatras offering a deeply healing potential. The narrative reflects on past knowledge versus current understanding, highlighting the need for sensitive forest management. "The Legacy of Hohenlohe" transcends typical documentaries, reconstructing the mindset of a man deeply connected to nature.
